Day 29
Oh. Thank. God.
Day 29 is done.
We worked on stuff, I showed updated marks with everything except the CA and the exam.
It was fueled with Tim Hortons.

Day 28
Had a bit of a catch up day. Nice. No unit test for the Unit Five stuff that came in.
I may regret that decision later on in life, but not today.
I marked the web quests today and was slightly shocked to hear that at least a few students "Just don't use them."
Will make for an easy way to mark the online CA's, let me tell you.

Day 27
So ... we got caught up today ... with presentations that should have already been done.
The first one helped everyone complete the "Funny disease chart" ... with stuff on it like Pertussis and influenza and the like.
Yeah, you got a mark for the information you shared with the group. It's already marked and the sheet is at the front of the room.
Next we did the second part of Friday's web quest on "Study of a Health Centre". The blog post will be marked on Friday May 10, but today was an oral presentation (which should have been done Monday or Tuesday) about the same centre.
Yeah, you got a mark for the information you shared with the group. It's already marked and the sheet is at the front of the room.
And so ... I gave another chart to get you to work on by yourself with such lovely diseases as HIV and AIDS. Make sure you know what is due when.

Day 26
We finished Deep Impact, the film today ... and for those who think it couldn't happen ... follow this link ... and what we're doing about it is at this link.
I was called away, but everything else was set up fo you to work by yourself anyway today.
The link for the 72 hours Questions is on the right, in the Unit Five Links.
Ok, see you tomorrow.
Oh, and I showed everybody an updated mark ... essh. Get some Unit Four and Three work done and in to me, please.

Day 25
So yeah, the pic above sure looked like my class this morning ... except for the addition of a sleeping guy in the corner.
Right, the first half we sort of sat around and I told me about what it was they were missing. As the others came in, I let them know I wasn't too happy with the stuff that I'm missing. I asked people to get ready for their presentations both on a disease and a wellness centre tomorrow.
You really really need to get stuff into me.
After break, I began a film study and handed out the questions for it.
Recap of Day 24
I was away today and left a web quest to be posted on your blog after you do a quiz.
Wha happened?
It's the end of the course and you need to get work done. You should.

Day 23
Hint, hint ... people need to be working on their culminating activities.
In any case, life goes on.
As we do here ... we finished the presentations on a Social Service today and we started Unit Five ... I handed out the diseases for the presentations and got the due dates up for Unit Five ... the last unit in this course. If you can't recall or were absent today, let me know and I'll get you something on which to present. Lots of diseases out there to spread ..... the knowledge about...
The last unit in this course ... which means people are panic handing in random assignments from Unit One ... which is kinda funny, since I've already handed them back to the class ...
See you next year .... ;)
Might want to take a look at the course Culminating Activity again, man. Just a hint.
Peace.

Day 22
Ahh ... the last part of the course ... or in my case, courses.
It goes on ... the proverbial chubby lady is warming up ... it is almost over.
In any case, we did some of the presentations on a Social Service ... the rest will go tomorrow
TOMORROW. As in THURSDAY .... DAY 22
After that, we watched Cottonland, the NFB film.

Day 21
So yeah ... today.
We had a lot of stuff going on today - and we handled it quite nicely.
We read through Chapter 19 of the textbook and got questions on page 484 and 495.
I also asked people to tell me which social service they were going to do for their presentation.
After that, I was able to sit and show people their updated marks.
Yeah, that was exciting.

Day 19 and Day 20
Thursday ... was the First Aid Booklet day. I got four or five in. Yeah, own that.
Monday .... was day 20 ... Friday was, of course, a PD Day.
In any case, Monday ... we got in, I got two more booklets and then we watched the film Contagion.
After we watched the film, I saw this article ... talk about timely...
At the end of the film, I spoke to people about their presentations that they will be making by the end of the week. A lot of rather shocked people there.

Day 18

Words to live by |
Review:
Don't tell me that my co-workers are "not that smart". You'd be surprised, I'm sure.
What did we do today:
We finished Unit Three officially with the Unit Test.
I collected some of the work in on time, but not very much. Makes it harder to mark later, if it comes in. Wonder why your mark is low? Hmmmm ... have you handed everything in yet?
Yeah, probably the answer.
I did show people their marks and let them see what it was they needed to hand in by the end of April to get marked.
I did also do this presentation on the Cycle of Infection, which for some was rather gross, and for some, something that interrupted their attempts to get a credit in another class. In any case, here is the Prezi:
Tuesday, April 23, 2013
Day 17
Ok, so I got the marks printed off and the IT guy came from the board ... good thing I backed everything up both on paper and on a thumb drive.
He's going to destroy that evil laptop. And it deserves it.
In any case, What did we do today?
We took a look at what we were missing from marked stuff and got busy on it. Except for some:
![]() |
Face booked |
In any case, we read form the textbook, getting questions on page 182 and 193 from the textbook.
Then, we worked and tried to hand in work. Oh, and I got most of the blogs to work and posted on this blog. Linking learning works. Trust me.
Monday, April 22, 2013
Day 16
It would have been nice to have a typical Day 16 ... alas, not to be.
It started off normally enough - with us catching up on work. We did the Task Two Case Study today ... it should have been something else ... but we got stuck for time and we're making due with what we got. So, we watched Beyond the Blues, a film form the National Film Board. The Case Study Questions were due by the end of class.
After break, we started on the course Culminating Activity - a blog for each student. I did collect the URL's for each and I will post them on here for everyone to see what others are doing.
Then ... the school laptop did ... not very much. I have the course marks on it ... and it kept crashing. Honest!
Which means ... updated marks tomorrow.

Day 15
I tried to get a quick thing done today with Maslow's HON - it worked a lot better last year, with one PPT for the whole chapter.... meh, it still worked better than a few years ago where we plodded through the unending chapters on Mental Health. Questions on this classwork will be included in the Journal, due April 24th.
In any case, after that, we watched this
then, as a after thought ... well, no not really, we read up to Page 178 in the textbook and got 1,2,3 and 5 for homework/Journal work.
After that, I handed out a sheet on how to start your own blog ... which is what the culminating activity will be all about ....
Thursday, April 18, 2013
Day 14
At least I think this is day 14. I could be wrong. I'll check that.
I was away yesterday, and you characters watched a film. Of course, the questions on that film need to come in ASAP.
So .. today we watched .... a movie about wastes. As a matter of fact, it was called "Crapshoot: the gamble with our wastes" ... it is online, the link in the previous post.
After that, we took a look at some of the ideas about Stewardship that we've already covered in this unit, and where we're going to next. I mentioned that I would post a link about NASA and the search for planets around other stars ... and here it is .... much later in the day, NASA also released this rather cool press release ... that they'd found other planets like Earth around far away suns .... makes you think, I hope ... Mental Health starts tomorrow.
Oh, by the way .... here is a link for an article that got tweeted to me about linking failing students to too much social media use. Hint, hint...
In any case, I have a pile of marking to hand back to people, just waiting on my desk. Come get it.

Away, away ... day 13
For the PPZ 3O class (“the morning class”), lesson plan is as follows:
Watch the film “an Inconvenient Truth” - A link is on the course blog to a legally posted version online.
The film is about 2 hours in length and the student should already have a copy of the questions. If not, the questions are below.
The Answers to the questions can be handed in either today by the end of class or tomorrow to me, at the Supply teacher’s discretion.
If, having finished watching AIT, the students are not doing anything positive towards finishing productive work, at the teacher’s discretion, they can being a second film study, this time on a film entitled “Crapshoot: the Gamble with our wastes” The link is posted on the course blog as well. It is an NFB film, and so is also copyright free.
Questions on AIT
1What image started the modern day environmental movement?
2Why is the atmosphere considered the most important part of the earth system?
3Sketch the general trend of the Carbon Dioxide level versus time as a graph.
4Why study ice from glaciers and the North/South Pole?
5As water temperature goes up, what happens to the speed of the wind?
6What country is the largest contributor to greenhouse gases?
7Which country has the lowest standards for gas mileage?
Questions on “Crapshoot”
Film Study “Crapshoot: the Gamble with our wastes”
1The film makers did not just study Canada and issues here. Create a chart with at least three of the countries studied on one side of the chart, and the issue that the film makers studied on the other. Complete the chart.
2Specific to Canada: what are some of the “waste”/ “sludge” issues within Canada that we are dealing with these days?
3There was an interview with a few people on the street in various places the film makers went. Why do this in a film of this genre?
4There were a lot of interviews with scientists in this film. Was there any one particular scientist (or “expert”) that said something that shocked you/offended you/ made you think?
5This is a film that does not hold back when showing people what is up with wastes. Was there anything that grossed you out? Why?
6Has this film provided any inspiration to you to think about your impact as a Steward of the planet? Why or why not?

Day 12
So .. .we officially finished the Second Unit in this class, the one on Consumer Health. To end it officially, we did the unit test today.
After that, I got ...some of the Journals in on time. Not all, of course... some.
At about 9:30 I started the next unit, called "Unit Three: Stewardship and Mental/Emotional Health." Yeah, a weird little unit, let me tell you. I also gave out the unit Terms, too.
After that ... things went a little weird. I got the wrong thing to show my students. Instead of the third episode of "Wonders of the Solar System" I started to show episode three of "Wonders of the Universe." ....rookie mistake, I know, I know.
In any case, after break, we got the right episode of the right show on. Questions, too.
I have to point out the questions .... "Why are we watching this show? What has this show got to do with Phys Ed.?" ... and the fact is, I answered this one twice. To get a really good understanding of "Stewardship" you have to first understand what a "Runaway green house effect" is.
You have to understand why Carbon Monoxide in the atmosphere isn't always a good thing.
And ... you have to understand a bit about weather here on Earth.
But, if yo want to keep on texting / listening to your own music / playing video games through the class, you help yourself.
In any case, here's a preview of tomorrow:
Monday, April 15, 2013
Day 11
So ... today, as the picture above reflects was a "catch up" day.... that is, I show you what you owe me in terms of homework and you did it.
Well, some of that actually happened.
I got a lot of stuff ready for our next unit, Mental Health and Stewardship. Should be epic.
We're going to see this guy:

Day 10 April 11 Web assignment
Web Quest April 11, 2013
PPZ Nutrition
Your significant other has just come home from a visit to the doctor with the news that they are overweight and have really high blood pressure. They ask you for help in understanding the instructions from the doctor about getting healthy. They say, “Since you are in Chesser’s Health for Life class, you can help, right? Please?”
You are going to help them get healthy.
History:
Your loved one is a big fan of fast food, unhealthy snacks, TV, and the internet. Their picture is up at the local burger joint as “Customer of the Month”. They have turned internet surfing into a sponsored event. You need to help your loved one because they are on the fast track to heart disease and possibly diabetes.
Task:
You need to plan out an eating plan for a week of meals and two days of physical activities for you and your loved one. These meals should be simple and the exercise routine should be explained in simple terms that anyone can understand.
Using the handout “Web quest April 11” sheet, on one side, fill out the meal plan for the week and the workout plan you’ll help your loved one complete. If you don’t like my handout, feel free to create something similar to be printed off and handed in by the end of class.
Use the “Unit Two Links” on the course blog to help you design this program for your loved one. If you do use other sources, make sure they are reliable sources and click and paste a list of any other resources you used, to be handed in with your plan to the teacher by the end of class today.

Day 9
Man ... awesome day.
We read a lot today.
We read until page 58 and got questions 1, 3, 4
Then we read until page 75 1,2, 4, 8
Then.... I showed you the Task Two poster assignment ... well, at least most saw the assignment at the front of the class and in your notebook. It's due soon. You should look at the due dates.
In any case, we ended with reading.... again. We finished until page 108 and got questions 1, 4 and 6.

April 9 - Day 8
Right. Today. We finished watching the film "Forks over Knives".
Questions are due the day after the film, so make that happen.
After that, we got the Culminating Activity / Final assessment for this course. It is asking people to keep an online blog for 21 days to help them get to a better place with their health.
Yeah, it's a big ask.
In any case, that took us to break. After, we got to Skype with a fitness professional from Vancouver, Christopher Reed. I had sent the questions ahead of time, and so after a few jokes to start, we got to them. A write up of the conversation is due with the Unit Two Journal, April 16th.
After that, we got a chance to get things started. A lot of stuff is coming due, and so ... I need to give you a chance in class to get them done. So ... do them already.
Oh yeah, during the conversation, a mention of the Tgu Toner (misspelled on purpose) was made and in order to slowly work my way up to an explanation of that product, I showed this video of Jimmy Kimmel:

Friday and Monday Day 6 and 7
Whew!
Finally getting caught up on this blog. Man, I jsut don't normally get behind, but that is what's happeneing here.
I will do better.
On Friday we were watching Super Size Me - the link is under the Unit Two links for those who missed it. We managed to finish it while I was away for the last little bit of the class.
On Monday, we started with a bit of watching Forks over Knives ... a great documentary about a way to improve your health by eating better food. Lots of ideas are controversial in that film, but it's at least worthy of asking questions about what you eat.
In addition to that, we also did a chart of Vitamins, based on the ideas in and around page 90 in the text book. Extra copies are in the box at the front of the room. It was awesome, and people learned a lot.
Including that "alot" isn't a real word. "a space lot" is the way it is. A lot.

Day 5

We had a Unit Test for Unit One today. OOOOOH Scary, kids.
After students were done, they were asked to hand in their Journal for Unit one, too. I got a fair number, but more are needed. As students worked away on that, I also got some to work on their Family Health Histories - as a part of Task Three in this Unit.
I did have Unit Two ready to go, but didn't get a chance to hand it out, as some of the "Factor" presentations for this unit got done, too.
Tomorrow: the last of the presentations and start Unit Two along with doing a bit more on the APA Style report for Tuesday.
Woot!

Day 4
Ah ...Wednesdays... usually, the middle of the week, this week ... end of the first half of the week.
Awesome.
We started today with doing some reading from the text book - questions for all readings are now up on the right hand side of the blog.
After that, we spent some time on the class blog, looking at the Family Health History website and the really big assignemtn on it.
We also took a look at the Cheap APA Style Report, too
After that, we got a chance to complete the work that is due tomorrow.

Day three
![]() |
A visual representation of my class today. |
Hmm ... going to have to find out what happened to Day Two... interesting.
In any case, today was one with a lot of hurdles. For one, the school was completely cut off from the internet. Not a single internet connection worked. Made for a lot less interesting stuff to do in my class. I did speak / bug the school IT guy about it. Of course it wasn't his fault, but I felt like poking fun at him a little.
In class, we read from the text book, twice, getting questions on page 32 and 36 for homework. A complete list will be published on this blog tomorrow.
I did also speak very briefly about the Family Health History/"Task Three" (I showed a semi-complete one I had save on my hard drive from two years ago) and took names and topics from the short "Factor" presentation due for Task Two.
After that, we did homework and I nagged people about being in class and not lining up by the door.
Wednesday, March 27, 2013
Day One
Well, recapping today ... what a day one.
We went through the rather long winded speech by Chesser about the rules, the class and what he's expecting while in the classroom.
Then, we read from the text until page 9 and got questions on page 9 for homework - 2, 3, 5 and 7.
...and then we got the terms for Unit one and then got a web quest of 15 questions to get done.
So ... get it done!
Saturday, March 23, 2013
...and here we go .. again!
I'm getting this online presence ready for using it in the classroom again.
If you are a follower of this blog, get ready for six weeks of cool information and assignments.
If you are new here, take a look around. It's cool, this blog can handle anything.
Peace.
...hmm .. .just as an add on for the day, I read this today and can't park it anywhere else.
